Abstract

The purpose of this article is to introduce the concept of ‘axiological coordinates of culture’. It has the following objectives: 1) identify its meaning for the concept of culture — the ‘Cult of Light’, 2) provide a rationale for the positive and negative sides of culture as a contributor to the preservation and development of homo sapiens or destruction of man and our biospecies, 3) introduce value orientation, vital coordinates of the personality and its orientation towards Light or darkness, 4) analyze the concept of cultural studies as a potential worldview and humanitarian type of science. In our research, we have examined two approaches to the definition of culture — a broad, or ‘superficial’ one, and a narrow, or essential one. According to the latter, the meaning of culture is the ‘Cult of Light’, i. e. support of all positive things leading to the preservation and development of homo sapiens. I. Kant and his followers offer a system of cultural ideals and values, which consists of ‘Truth, Goodness and Beauty’. We complement this system with the ideals of ‘Love and Faith in the Supreme’. The system of opposing values, or ‘anticulture’, is ‘lies, evil, ugliness, hatred and faith in Satan’. It is explicitly or implicitly followed by that part of society that contributes to the degradation and selfdestruction of both the individual and our biospecies as a whole. We also introduce the concept of ‘cultural space’, which forms the totality of any thoughts and actions of a person. Within this space, a person who is freely choosing his/her life path is guided either by ‘Light’ or ‘darkness’ (a positive or negative value system). Our study also focuses on consciousness as a source of cultural activity. Cultural studies are considered in two different senses — as a worldview teaching and as a scientific and humanitarian theory.
