Women’s gloves of Leningrad 1950–1960s in the focus of the haberdashery industry and the fashion industry

Abstract

Women's gloves from Leningrad in the 1950s and 1960s are of particular interest from the point of view of an accessory combining both functional and aesthetic significance. The functionality was revealed in the protection of the hands from the adverse effects of the environment. The aesthetic component was traced in the formation of a holistic vision of the model's image. Having gone from an object of worship and adoration to an attribute of a ladies' toilet reflecting class affiliation, gloves during the «that» in the Soviet country acquire a business style and become a luxury item. Due to the influence of European fashion, as well as accessibility in the context of pricing policy, every intelligent woman tried to purchase several model's of gloves suitable for festive events and for everyday wear. The purpose of this study was to study the types of models of women's gloves that were in demand in the fashion industry, in the haberdashery industry and in everyday life. Based on the studied corpus of scientific literature, the analysis of the materials of the albums of the House of Models, the exhibits of the museum «XX years after the war. The Museum of Everyday Culture of Leningrad in 1945–1965». An attempt was made to examine the trending models of women's gloves produced at the Leningrad Leather Goods Manufacturing Enterprise named after A. Bebel and to comprehend their role in shaping the living environment. The material will be useful for students studying the history of Leningrad fashion within the framework of specialized educational programs, as well as for specialists interested in the history of fashion, the history and theory of the fashion industry, the history of fashion houses and fashion trends of Leningrad during the «thaw» period.
