The review analyzes the new edition of the Russian State Pedagogical University named after A. I. Herzen, dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the Institute of Art Education (formerly the Faculty of Art and Graphics). — “The photographer. Beginning. Chronicle of the Art and Graphic Faculty of the Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute named after A. I. Herzen: essays (2025). The research was based on archival documents from the Central State Archives of St. Petersburg (materials from the Institute’s records management) and personal files from the Personnel Archive of the A. I. Herzen Russian State Pedagogical University for 1959–1962.
The authors substantiated and presented the history of the first three years of the Faculty of Art and Graphics in the context of the development of the tasks of school and higher education and the internal struggle for the specifics of the faculty, identified the personalities of the first years of work. The beginning of work on the study of the history of the modern Institute of Art Education of the Russian State Pedagogical University named after A. I. Herzen is given in detail and accurately in reference to the documentary database.
An important point of the research is the fact that the opening of the art and graphic faculty was associated with the beginning of systematic training of teachers of drawing, drawing and labor for mass schools based on “technical drawing”, in demand in the Soviet school of the late 1950s–early 1960s.
An important addition is the appendix to the book, which contains photographs of the first deans, V. I. Evteev and V. A. Kobzarev, available on the basis of personal files.
It should be noted that the preface to the publication was written by Vyacheslav Babiyak, Doctor of Art History, Professor, professor of the Department of Graphics and Sculpture at the Institute of Art Education, one of the university's oldest teachers, and a witness to many events
Hopefully, a detailed study of the institute's history based on archival materials will continue, and key events and names associated with the faculty in subsequent periods of the twentieth century will be presented.
