“The portrait will tell us about it”: The methodological heritage of Olga Efimovna Ivanova

Abstract

The article presents the path of professional development and analysis of methodical approaches to the organisation of students work with visuals in history lessons of Ivanova Olga Efimovna — candidate of historical sciences, assistant of the Department of Pedagogy at the Herzen State Pedagogical Institute (1922–1933), associate professor of the Department of History of Middle Ages at Saint Petersburg State University (1944–1959), wife of I. I. Ioffe — Soviet art historian and art theorist. The Bibliography of Saint Petersburg State University (SPbU) (Biografika… 2025) website states in the area of research interests that Olga Efimovna contributed to the development of historical science: to the study of Polonistics, agrarian history of late medieval Poland, and class struggle in the Polish countryside. One line serves as a reminder of her research in the field of history teaching methodology, in particular the study of the use of visual aids.

The issue of using visual teaching aids has been in the focus of attention of the scientific community of different fields for centuries. In history teaching methodology it was studied by such researchers as A. A. Vagin, P. V. Gora, N. G. Dairy, I. M. Gritsovsky, M. V. Korotkova and others. Olga Efimovna Ivanova, too, devoted a number of scientific works to this topic, combining the theoretical foundations of the use of this medium with practical experience of pedagogical activity. She considered the historical art portrait and the educational historical picture as independent historical sources with the help of which the teacher can familiarise students with historical content. Such methodological recommendations as the selection of means of pictorial visualisation, its adaptation taking into account the age characteristics of the class and the selection of historical facts to create a plot story are relevant when conducting modern history lessons.
