I. I. Ioffe as a University student at the Psychoneurological Institute and the Herzen Institute: On the issue of finding teachers

The article is devoted to the student period in the biography of a prominent Russian art historian and art theorist, expert in cultural studies Ieremia Isaevitch Ioffe (1888–1947). The author analyzes materials from the Central State Historical Archive of Saint Petersburg, the Central State Archive of Saint Petersburg, the Central State Archive of Historical and Political Documents of Saint Petersburg, the Central State Archive of Literature and Arts of Saint Petersburg, many of which are being introduced into scientific usage for the first time. The most important primary sources of the study are I. I. Ioffe’s student files from the collections of the Psychoneurological Institute and the Herzen Institute, where he studied in 1917–1923. His matricula are documents of particular importance, since they allow us to clarify the nomenclature of the disciplines he studied and the personalities of his teachers. An analysis of these materials allows the author of the article to state that the time of study at the Psychoneurological Institute was too short for studies there to be considered as decisive for the formation of I. I. Ioffe. The conclusions made on this account in historiography often seem poorly substantiated. Studying at the Herzen Institute, on the contrary, could well have had a significant influence on I. I. Ioffe’s style of thinking as a scholar. Certainly, his future patrons were precisely his teachers from there — Vasily Alekseevich Desnitsky and Boris Aleksandrovich Fingert.
