Abstract

This article presents a comprehensive study of the process of hybrid identity formation among contemporary university students, conceptualized through the synthesis of traditional values and digital behavioral patterns. The authors aim to overcome the limitations of classical approaches, which capture only superficial manifestations of value orientations, and propose an innovative methodology termed ‘Hero of the Time’ to map the complex architecture of the younger generation’s worldview. The empirical data for the research were collected at the Institute of Human Philosophy of Herzen University in 2025 through a survey of 250 humanitiesThe data students. Data analysis revealed stable structural elements of a hybrid worldview, including digital authenticity, strategic pragmatism, contextual ethics, and adaptive traditionalism. Simultaneously, the study documented several cognitive dissonances: for instance, the declaration of romanticism alongside the prioritization of success over romance, the desire for social recognition coupled with the rejection of popularity as a value, and dependence on digital technologies combined with a conscious desire to achieve a balance between online and offline life. These paradoxes highlight not eclecticism, but the strategic nature of combining value elements, which enables students to function effectively in a polyphonic reality. Based on the findings, the authors conclude that today’s students are not experiencing an identity crisis, but are actively constructing a new, complex identity adequate to the challenges of the digital age. The collective portrait of the ‘hero of the time’ identified in the study represents a synthesis of opposites. This image reflects a strategy of ‘conscious conformism’ — the desire to preserve individuality within the framework of social expectations. The practical significance of the study lies in the potential application of its findings to modernizing value-based student development in higher education: rather than diagnosing isolated values, the educational paradigm must focus on developing the capacity for the conscious construction of a hybrid identity that can adapt effectively to a rapidly changing world.
