The article provides an overview of research in Russian rap culture. The works are classified by time, subject, and research methodology. The study shows a correlation between an increase in research and the popularity of rap battles in 2015–2017. The article explains the popularity of studies in rap culture among young scholars and shows why more experienced researchers opt for an evaluative approach. The article also identifies the branches of knowledge with an unwavering focus on rap studies in Russia (linguistics, translation studies, sociology).
Despite the controversial attitude to hip-hop culture, rap is gaining popularity in Russia. It is making its way from the music of underground to mainstream music to become an economically viable asset of cultural industry. Now, it is absolutely clear that rap has turned from an exclusively subcultural phenomenon into the phenomenon of global culture no longer limited to the age group of 14–20-year-olds. Modern Russian rap is a mouthpiece for youth protests and the most pressing challenges of our time. It has acquired the aesthetic features inherent to serious art. High-quality rap is marked by philosophical depth and multiple meanings and it takes intellectual effort to get it.
Russian rap has become part of political, religious, and social discourse, hence its potential for research. Many texts are marked by high artistic quality and will leave their mark on the history of Russian literature. Consistent large-scale literary analysis of rap texts is not far away. It will make it possible to understand the scope and originality of creative/poetic projects as well as the specifics of modern cultural industry.
