The Swedish writer and illustrator Sven Nordqvist is famous by his series of books about Pettson and Findus. In 2018, he created a new silent book titled The Dog Walk (Hundpromenaden). In a Russian edition by the publishing house Belaya Vorona (White Crown), the title is translated just as Progoulka (‘the walk’).
In the book, words are used only in the back-cover blurb, while inside the book there is nothing else but pictures of imaginary worlds. Before Hundpromenaden, Nordqvist already used a similar style in a 2007 book Var är min syster? (Where is my Sister?), where the text had secondary functions compared to the illustrations. In one of his interviews, Nordqvist said he was not interested in reflecting reality, as he created fantastic worlds.
The Dog Walk is a book without any text and a sort of album of fantastic worlds united by the idea of a journey. Each double page spread is a new fantastic world which the main characters pass through: it differs from the other worlds but is connected with them in a common system of images. The journey has a certain logic and artistic devices which determine the style of the book: grotesque, hyperbole and associative references to the world fiction.
The accentuated details of images in Nordqvist’s book serve a number of purposes — both worldview-related (like showing the diversity and richness of the fantasy world) and genre-related. Hundpromenaden is a wimmelbilderbuch that the reader can not only look through, but also play with. However, the potential of the book is wider than just playing: Hundpromenaden by Nordqvist makes it possible to find the connection with children’s fiction of the world and with the world culture in general.
