Abstract

This article examines the role of a preacher played by the young V. G. Belinsky in his correspondence with relatives in the late 1820s and early 1830s. Our study shows that he builds the hyperplot of a sermon, formally diversifying it. Weakening it at times and strengthening it at others, he switches between the registers of a request (in letters to his father), advice (to his mother and his brother Konstantin, who was the same age), warning (to his younger brother Nikanor), etc. The differences between them, however, prove formal and ultimately illusory. He alternately makes an appeal to the tradition of biblical preaching (combining the features of a lesson and a parable) and conventional wisdom. Meanwhile, by means of such appeals and under their cover, he develops a plot of his very own, making it persuasive for readers. Using the term coined by Yu. V. Kagarlitsky, Belinsky’s writing manifests the ‘sacralization’ of the text. Firstly, he teaches his relatives something similar to what can be found in the Holy Scripture, invoking and nearly quoting it. Secondly, he speaks in parables, as Christ did in the Gospel sermon. He actualizes the plots of Christ’s parables, using them as a model for the parables of his own. At the same time, he employs the biblical word to teach earthly and everyday ‘wisdom’ in his own special way. The role of a preaching teacher served to complement, neutralize and greatly facilitate the role of a petitioner, son and brother in which the epistolographer Belinsky — hit hard by financial difficulties, worsening health, expulsion from the university and lack of housing — also had to speak out before the loved ones.
